A Practical Way to Think About Employee Turnover

Look beyond a vacancy to understand where a transition creates work and cost.

Turnover affects more than recruiting. A team may spend time covering work, interviewing candidates, training a replacement and rebuilding working knowledge. The effect differs by role and organization.

Instead of relying on a generic cost estimate, list the steps your business actually takes when someone leaves. Estimate the time involved and note any service, scheduling or knowledge gaps that follow.

This simple view can reveal where better onboarding, manager check-ins or clearer role expectations may help. It is a planning aid, not a promise that one intervention will prevent departures.
