What Should Be Included in an Employee Handbook?

A useful handbook explains how work operates and where people can find current guidance.

A handbook is most useful when it reflects actual workplace practices and is written so employees and managers can use it. Common sections describe how to get help, communicate expectations and find current policies.

The right content varies by organization, workforce and jurisdiction. Start with a list of current practices, note where managers answer the same question differently, and identify policies that need owner and legal review.

Treat the handbook as a living document. Assign an owner, record the version and review it when business practices or applicable requirements change.

General educational information only. It is not legal advice or a substitute for guidance on your specific situation.
